A box-to-box midfielder with bundles of skill and power, he has represented Germany’s under-21 team and was initially tipped to break into the Spurs first team in the next few years, having been voted Germany’s best young player in 2006. His progress had stalled until he was given an opportunity at Portsmouth where he flourished under the tutelage of Avram Grant combining his raw ability and skill with Jamie O'Hara's passing prowess and playmaking style, he was allowed to have a more fluid role in the team where he often played almost in a trequarista role behind Frédéric Piquionne.
